Jesus calls us to love one another in a world often divided by differences.
John 13:34–35 (NIV)
"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
Jesus, speaking to His disciples about His departure, leaves them with this timeless instruction: to love one another. The world we live in today, much like the first century, is rife with political, racial, and economic divisions. Jesus' words, as radical today as they were when He first spoke them, continue to resonate with us, offering a different way of understanding and life.
Love is often misunderstood and abused in our world today. The transformative love Jesus demonstrates is selfless, sacrificial, gentle, and humble. These qualities do not signify weakness but rather a strength that looks to the interests of others before self (Phil. 2:3). Love seeks to build up and not break down. It seeks restoration and unity, offering hope in a world often marked by isolation and division.
Jesus instructs His followers to love one another in a world often divided over differences. Love is the mark of following Jesus. What can you do today to extend the love of Jesus to others in your life? How can we show Jesus and not just talk about Jesus?
